Alleged specs and another photo of Sony Xperia G leak

Shortly after we got treated to a first look at the Sony Xperia G, another leaked photo of the upcoming device made the rounds on Twitter. This time around, the image comes with alleged specs for the mid-range smartphone.

According to the source of the leaked images, the Sony Xperia G will feature LTE connectivity, 4.8” display of unknown resolution (720p is likely), 8MP camera, 8GB of built-in memory (microSD card slot was clearly visible in the first leak), and a gig of RAM. The handset is tipped to come with no IP rating. There is no word on the chipset of the upcoming device.

The Sony Xperia G will likely break cover during MWC at the end of this month in Barcelona. We will be there live, so will keep an eye out for the device.

Office for iPad to arrive by summer, says sources

Microsoft Office for iPad has been teased for a while now, with news concerning it arising in various bits and leaks over the course of many months. The latest among them is word from various sources that Microsoft plans to roll out its productivity software in the first half of this year, a jump from the previously-projected Fall timeline.

The information comes from the folks at ZDNet, which says both Microsoft officials and other sources have confirmed Office for iPad is not only in the works, but coming sooner than has been anticipated. Until now, word has had it Office for iPad was slated to arrive after the Metro-style variety of Office, which is codenamed Gemini.

According to the sources, the decision to launch Office for iPad after the launch of the Metro version was nixed late last year, with Microsoft instead deciding to launch the iPad version when it is ready. As such, the sources are saying it'll be available in the first half of this year, which means we'll see it by the middle of this summer, if all pans out.

Microsoft has declined commenting on the latest news. It still isn't clear how Office for iPad will be offered -- whether as part of an Office 365 subscription or something else altogether. If the sources are correct, however, we only have a few months at the most left of waiting, so we'll find out soon enough regardless.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (SM-T530) and Tab 4 8.0 (SM-T330) visit the FCC

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (SM-T530) and Tab 4 8.0 (SM-T330) visit the FCC

The FCC today approved two unannounced Samsung tablets: SM-T530and SM-T330, both Wi-Fi-only. As previously reported, the SM-T530 should be launched as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, while the SM-T330 is expected to be commercialized as the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0.

As almost always, the FCC documentation is scarce on details, but we can see sketches of both the SM-T530 and SM-T330. These are all but confirming that the former is a 10.1-inch tablet, while the latter is an 8-inch one. Although they're different in size, the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 and Tab 4 8.0 reportedly share many of their features, including displays with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, Android 4.4 KitKat, quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processors, and 16GB of expandable internal memory.

A smaller Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 should join the 8-inch and 10.1-inch models in Samsung’s new family of tablets. It’s said that all three devices will be announced at MWC later this month, when we’re also expecting to see Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone.

HTC is looking into updating the US HTC One X to Android 4.4

HTC’s decision to leave its 2012 flagships, the HTC One X and One X+, on Android 4.2 was met with a vocal outcry from owners of said phones. In a Q&A session on Reddit, a team of HTC managers revealed the decision wasn’t up to the company.

They pointed the finger at NVIDIA, saying the chipset maker didn’t provide the necessary support to port Android 4.4 KitKat to Tegra 3.

In the US, the One X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (for the LTE support) but it’s not getting KitKat either. “We didn’t think it would be a good experience for our customer base to update the X, but not the X+.” Note: One X+ is powered exclusively by Tegra.

The company has now had a change of heart and is “actively exploring” an update to Android 4.4 for the US HTC One X. It’s not clear if the HTC One XL - the international variant of the Snapdragon phone - will be updated or not.

In case you’re wondering how the Nexus 7 (2012) got KitKat with its Tegra 3 chipset, it’s because inside it is the T30L. The HTC One X and One X+ use the AP33 and AP37 respectively. It’s unclear why, but NVIDIA is supporting the T30L better than the AP3x, leading to this debacle.

You can read the whole Ask Me Almost Anything (AMAA) thread over at Reddit. There's more discussions than just the One X thing - the HTC team also revealed the company is working with Microsoft to update the HTC 8X to Windows Phone 8.1 ("Blue"), which is not fully official yet.
